Here so Rain: Black Submarine Debut Single

21 January, 2014

Written by Fashion Fox in art culture music

Black Submarine has been growing a following under the radar. Formed out of the remains of The Verve Nick McCabe and Simon Jones, in the words of the song it’s a man’s world but it ain’t nothing without a woman, in this case Michele ‘Mig’ Schillace recruited singer Amelia Tucker who is destined to be one of music history’s outstanding front women with her strong lyrical vocals that transport you to an etheric dream space.

This band have been brewing since 2008 only putting out an their Black Ships EP in 2011, the new single “Here so Rain” released on Feb 3rd has received support from BBC 6 Music, Clash Magazine and XFM. This is a ripe synthesis of some of rock’s greatest musicians. McCabe and Jones are The Verve’s Guitarist and bassist respectively, Davide Rossi is an instrumentalist and arranger having worked with with Goldfrapp and Coldplay and Michele ‘Mig” Shillace is former drummer from Portishead and Santa Cruz who was managing Amelia Tucker who brings the band’s sound to a unique focus. Cast in red they’re a strikingly graphic synth band, red seems to be the colour uniform for great synth rock, hey it worked for Devo, Kraftwerk and as I recall Franz Ferdinand, I’m guessing it’s a wink at those of us who are into the artwork as much as the music. As a music and fashion writer/photographer and evidently a resounding Geek-ess I also know that this is a major trend colour for SS14, so get it on.

There’s the lightness and minor keys married with orchestral grandeur you’d expect from the band’s pedigrees. There’s something of the melancholy of Canadian band Black Mountain, that I love so much blended with the echoes anthemic euphoria and of 90s which was crucible of so much great music. There music is not all etheric loveliness, check their eponymous track, for dark and dirty beats and snidy riffs.

Here so Rain is a track we need on headphones to blow away the grating banality that seems to be reigning in the world of music and indeed our politics. Fashion has become the pop that the kids follow, so its not surprising that mature musicians are coming back into the scene, you don’t need to be a kid anymore. The sheer musicality of Black Submarine is sublime, mixed by Jim Spencer (Robert Wyatt, Echo & The Bunnymen, Factory Floor, Oasis), this has the depth of experience with the relaxed sound that only musicians who have “made it” in a former life can produce. Here so Rain washes down on you the way great and truly epic tracks do without the pomposity of early works (Bitter Sweet Symphony) can.

Playing only two dates, I suggest you get to Manchester Deaf Institute Feb 5th to witness Black Submarine as the Feb 6th date a Wilton’s Music Hall, London is now sold out.

“Here so Rain” is released on Feb 3rd

Their album “New Shores” is released March 9th

More information is available on their website

Music directors of Runway and Catwalk shoes take note.
