Increasingly more and more men’s fashion is influencing the ladies with androgyny in our shops and catwalks every season. One of the key trends at the minute is the brogue, strongly influenced by the shoes we see in the men’s departments, these have been adapted to suit us ladies. Influences in fashion wearing this kind of footwear are the likes of Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, Victoria Beckham and Rihanna in a variety of different outfit styles.

A few pointers to remember:

As they contain a lot of detailed stitching make sure there are no large gaps between, as with a bit of wear and tear this will loosen and could rip. Also make sure the sole is fixed well to the body of the shoe itself. Don’t forgot to invest in a pair in a good leather, so it will take a polish to make them look as good as new again. These are a staple item for your wardrobe that can be worn time and time again. With spring just around the corner, a nude or tan would make a great pair to invest in. Nude will also help to elongate your legs!

How to Style Brogues:

Ankles - Be sure to remember that to make these look their best to, wear with cut off trousers or jeans, shorts or dresses but ankles must be on show to give a good proportion.

Keep it girly – You still want to look feminine right? To keep the outfit pretty, floral dresses or pastel coloured two pieces with a floppy hat and girly jewellery will complement the masculinity of the shoes. Or if you want to keep the masculinity throughout – wear a blazer with A-Line trousers with a blouse and perhaps a bow tie.

Dressy – If you want to dress them up try a metallic pair, there are lots in silvers and golds with slim or chunky heels. As well as heeled brogues; channelling your inner librarian! Both would look equally as good with jeans, dresses or cropped Capri pants.

Overall the brogue is really versatile and easy to wear for almost any occasion whether patent, leather, suede, monk strap, or laceless.

Perhaps we should take more pointers from the men’s departments…
