Prestat and The Chocolate Factory
Ever wondered what the real (and supremely more luxe and adult friendly) Willy Wonker's Chocolate Factory is like? I met Nick Crean, co-owner of Prestat a chocolatier, who has entered into literary myth via the lascivious Uncle Oswald by Roald Dahl who plied his romantic conquests with these indulgent chocolate delights to guarantee the seduction process. This is not Charlie's adventure land, this is a place where adults chocolate dreams come true.
Date at the Dorchester
Peter Brooker our chap about town, takes a date to the Dorchester for breakfast: At the far end of the Promenade in the Dorchester I grab a cappuccino for £6.80 and ask the French bus boy for a paper as I wait for my date who is a rather fetching Filipino carer from Ilford. The bus boy comes back with a copy of Viz comic and a tip for the 3.20 at Redcar. Only joking, not at The Dorchester.
Maison Trois Garcons
Peter Brooker has joined our fearsome team of writers at Fashion Fox. He invites you to come on his peregrinations through London and sample the hostelries and drinking holes of London with him as part of our growing series of lifestyle posts.
Last week I took up my friend’s recommendation and frequented Les Maison Trois Garcons which is a bar cum shop filled with antiques, interior design and curios down Redchurch Street. The literal translation of said self proclaimed lifestyle cafe is 'Three Young Boys'. My date was a spirited tee-total Chinese nurse.
Quintinye Vermouth Royal launches at Café Royal
There is something about Vermouth that instantly conjures up images of the series of adverts for Cinzano from the eighties, starring Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter flying first class, and the Martini girl rolling up with a tray of vermouth on her trusty roller-skates. Despite it being an essential ingredient of a classic Martini it seems the advertisers have done vermouth a disservice. However La Quintinye is a far more sophisticated affair. I discovered that Vermouth is having its own fashion moment in the world of alcoholic beverages.
Psychic Burger - Restaurant Review
You've heard of the 80s flick Mystic Pizza, Voodoo Rays pizza parlour and now a little further up the road in Dalston is Psychic Burger, the new(ish) kid on the block, which opened in Birthdays last summer taking over from Rita's as the in house eatery. The location is equally 80s with pastel neon signs, white tiled walls and American style booths and melamine tables. Its run by enthusiastic locals who have deviated from their music careers to embrace food. This is a relaxed food joint and pre/post rendez-vous point, with well chosen background music and locally sourced fresh food, they’re proving that ethical good food doesn’t have to be ponced up.
